Maine Youth Justice Campaign Director

Role Title:

Maine Youth Justice (MYJ) Campaign Director

ROLE DESCRIPTION 
Maine Youth Justice seeks a full-time Campaign Director to lead the Maine Youth Justice campaign. MYJ is a statewide collaborative campaign focused on juvenile justice reform. Candidates will be team leaders with a passion for juvenile justice reform, creative problem-solving, and relationship-building. The Campaign Director will supervise and work in close collaboration with the other campaign staff, including a MYJ Campaign Community Outreach Coordinator at Portland Outright and a MYJ Campaign Community Outreach Coordinator at  Maine Inside Out.

Primary Responsibilities:
Leadership/Management 

  • Oversee all aspects of the campaign including day-to-day operations, management of staff, the coordination and implementation of the fundraising operations.

  • Responsible for creating and managing the campaign budget and database.Work with specific constituency groups to organize their involvement with the campaign.

Communications 

  • Cultivate relationships with the press, set up interviews and identify media opportunities for the campaign.

  • Help write and develop campaign literature, web site in partnership with Youth First TA.

Fundraising/Finance 

  • Responsible for raising the money that will allow the campaign to accomplish its goals.

  • Work closely with the finance committee to meet the financial goals of the campaign.  

  • Oversee the financial and accounting aspects of the campaign. 

  • Monitor all contributions, maintain financial records and responsible for compliance with the relevant rules and regulations.

Youth Organizing:

  • Lead community organizing efforts to build base of youth/young adults.

  • Mobilize youth/young adults toward advocating for transformative change in their communities.

  • Engage in a dynamic and holistic model of youth organizing.

Salary:
Full time salary commensurate with experience; paid holidays, vacation and sick time; mileage reimbursement and health care stipend.

Role Title:

Maine Youth Justice (MYJ) Campaign Community Organizer at Portland Outright

Role Description:

Portland Outright seeks a Community Organizer who is skilled, able to listen to and follow the lead of LGBTQ+ youth, and who is devoted to our mission and principles of gender, racial and economic justice, youth power, and leadership development.

The Maine Youth Justice (MYJ) Campaign Community Organizer at Portland Outright will be Portland Outright’s lead organizer with a statewide collaborative campaign focused on juvenile justice reform. This position is mainly responsible for building and sustaining Portland Outright membership and youth organizing in the Maine Youth Justice Campaign. This organizer will work collaboratively with Outright staff, volunteers, and youth membership to design, facilitate, and implement youth organizing strategies around the state, supporting the mobilization of low-income, system-impacted LGBTQ+ young people into MYJ Campaign. MYJ Campaign Community Organizer at Portland Outright will work closely and in collaboration with MYJ Campaign Community Outreach Coordinator at Maine Inside Out and the MYJ Campaign Director in service of the goals of the campaign.

This will be a full-time position. Search will close once qualified candidate is found.

Qualifications and Skills

Required

  • 3+ years of youth organizing experience

  • Alignment with Outright’s core mission and values

  • Capacity to work effectively with youth and families from diverse backgrounds, including across race, class, place, sexual, and gender identities

  • Ability to plan strategically to impact community issues

  • Excellent communication skills--written and verbal, analytical and strategic planning skills. Experience in public speaking is a plus

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and to work collaboratively

  • Demonstrated history of commitment to social, economic, and racial justice; equity; and institutional change

  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred

  • Community organizing experience in low-income communities

  • Experience with participatory research, evaluation, youth-led campaign work and/or institutional educational change

  • Flexibility, desire to learn and an openness to challenge

Primary Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Act as a liaison between Portland Outright and the Campaign, regularly communicating with Outright/MIO staff, volunteers, and membership base regarding Campaign activities and decision-making.

  • Provide organizational representation in Campaign activities

  • Co-facilitate community meetings with Portland Outright

  • Co-facilitate youth-led campaign planning activities, as part of the broader campaign leadership team

  • Base-build: lead outreach efforts to continuously increase number of youth aware of and involved in Portland Outright programming and MYJ campaign

  • Provide support and mentorship to Portland Outright Youth Organizers, members, and leaders

  • Prep participants for public speaking and media opportunities

  • Represent Portland Outright in Campaign activities and participate in regular meeting with other organizational partners on behalf of the Campaign

  • Support ongoing collaboration on the local and national level, by engaging community partners and stakeholders and supporting youth leaders in their communication with the broader network of aligned Campaigns around the country

  • Outreach, attend and facilitate meetings with community partners about campaign strategy, including system stakeholders, attorneys, District Attorneys, state representatives, correctional officers 􏰀and law enforcement, Department of Corrections administrators

  • Supervised by Portland Outright Director and Maine Youth Justice Campaign Director, accountable to Portland Outright members and campaign executive committee.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Responsible for building and sustaining an identity and culture around being a member of Portland Outright

  • Advocate for individual youth members and leaders as needed

  • Continued study of political education to deepen political analysis

  • Other duties as assigned

(MYJ) Campaign Community Outreach Coordinator at Maine Inside Out (MIO) will work closely and in collaboration with (MYJ) Campaign Community Outreach Coordinator at Portland Outright and the (MYJ) Campaign Director in service of the goals of the campaign.

This is a full-time position.
